Aquaponic harvest and pictures

Fresh greens from the aquaponic garden!  They are mustard I think.  I have harvested several times and they are just growing faster and faster.

See these 5-6 plants that’s all the mustard I have.  But it is growing faster than I’m eating it.   Today I may do wilted greens   Which is a blast from my childhood.  I won’t be using bacon and bacon grease but coconut oil and maybe palm.  Chop green onions and fry them. Add vinegar then bring to a boil. Pour over greens and cover until they wilt.

I planted two tiny tomatoes in two different beds over a month ago. They have decided to grow. No blooms yet but hopefully soon. https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=100H2gCzd_j1snByL0EFCxLdKXBAVx4q7

Pictures of the most established bed. I planted green onions early.  It has some pansies that we’re clearenced last fall. A few spinach that haven’t grown as well as I would like. A big cabbage and a small broccoli.  Add green beans just coming up on one side so I can trellis them and it’s a full bed.

Planted radishes in the mustard bed on Saturday. They are coming up. I also have green beans among one edge to trellis. Malabar spinach on another edge to also trellis.  I’m not sure that the birds aren’t snacking on them to much.  Time will tell. A tomatillo center. One of the two bigger tomatoes and several small ones where I squished an over ripe Roma tomato.

Second Coffee

Chores start between 7:30 and 8 here.  Right now it is medium hard.  We have NINE baby calves  and 4 milk cows. One calf belongs to a milk cow. Two are beef calves we aquired from two different ranchers that lost the mamas and didn’t want to bottle.  Medium hard means they are all on the cows. We aren’t bottling twice a day but they aren’t smart enough to know which end to nurse on so you have to work with them. Give them another week and it will be easy again.

After chores I enjoy second coffee on my front porch if the weather is nice. Today it is beautiful! My dove are cooing and buttons are calling. Add all the tweety birds and it radiates peace and calm.

Since no post is complete without pictures I thought I would share what’s blooming now in my flower beds.

Flowers around the House

Roses!  This rose spent two years in a tub.  It bloomed but the blooms were small. This year it is saying thank you for the ground with huge roses!

I have no idea exactly what this plant is. It is a little plant.  It was clearenced of course. https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1DjQNjcPs9_DR_kLIaeHUj20X0WV3nh32

My friend gave me one of these maybe 10 years ago. For several years I kept it in the pot then got brave and put it in the ground where it started multiplying.  When the house was finished I dug some up and added them to a front yard flower pot. I think they are happy here!https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1N3J43opoT-oUwHkhxnm8aITfSb6l3HiO

Found this big cactus growing on the back side. It is about a foot across.  The blooms only last about two days.

Hanging baskets on the front porch.  They spent the winter inside.  https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=12rmERG8XqMHwEUqC8XZuZ_7jAaQlkgc1https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1tpgVp0vYemHLqGFpbBMiXM3iWz4jcA_2

Mother of Thousands anyone?https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1nh-_JqBKJK1RN_6Odo1A8yZJbD0mHnc2

One of my two aloes that needs repotting.  Soon I’m hoping to have a plant swap and dump and repot.   I repotting this last spring.  Leaving just the big one.  All the others came up within a year.

A friend gave me some iris several years ago. They also spent several years in pots and never bloomed.  This is the first one to bloom.

Aquaponic flowers and Plants

These cost a quarter back in the winter.  Some died some just sat there doing very little.  As warmer weather hit they have taken off.  https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1c8zK4dlLsjI7n3mHnufmnvKWXGAmZHizhttps://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1FqM0QgGz8xAdTw-xlPnWAtE9axIaJ0H8

Now. The onions in here have reminded me how much I love green onions.

I have been enjoying these greens for a couple of weeks. Last night I used them instead of hamburger buns. It was so good. They are crunchy. Not bitter at all.

My favorite paleo tortilla/pancake recipe

https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1PtLGwz7JWxSnFt8KhibwHjSVrivdK2oD

This is extremely simple and tasty recipe. In fact my husband likes it better than any other pancake recipe.  I make it up dry adding dried milk ahead of time then add water and egg when we are camping for pancakes. Even the grands are impressed.

Equal parts:
Almond flour
Arrorroot
Liquid
Baking powder 1/2 teaspoon if you are going with 1/2 cup measurements.  More as needed.

And liquid of your choice. I have done milk, almond milk, and water with powdered milk

1/2 cup Almond flour
1/2 cup Arrorroot
1/2 cup Liquid almond milk or milk
Baking powder 1/2 teaspoon
To make them pancakes add 2 eggs for every 1/2 cup of the equal parts

Grease a skillet or grill well and get it HOT ladle small ladles into the hot pan roll around to make it thin cook until bubbly turning when the edges start to brown for tortillas.  Or just ladle and let rise for pancakes.  Make sure the pancakes are cooked well they rise well leaving them raw in the middle.
